Understanding Earache Symptoms & Relief in London E2

An earache can affect one or both ears and may come with a variety of symptoms. Identifying the right earache symptoms & relief in London E2 is the first step toward recovery.

Common symptoms of an ear infection include:

  • Persistent Pain: A dull ache or sharp pain inside the ear.
  • Muffled Hearing: Feeling like your ear is “clogged” or underwater.
  • Fever: A high temperature, especially in young children.
  • Discharge: Fluid or pus leaking from the ear.
  • Irritability: In babies, this may be the only sign, often accompanied by them rubbing or pulling their ear.

What are the signs and symptoms of middle ear infection (Acute Otitis Media)?

In acute otitis media, symptoms develop quickly and usually resolve within a few days. The symptoms include:

  • Earache
  • Fever (a high temperature)
  • Being sick
  • Lack of energy
  • Slight hearing loss due to the fluid buildup
  • Discharge running out of the ears

  • Pulling on the ears
  • Rubbing on the ears
  • Being irritable and restless
  • Not feeding as normal
  • Not responding to some sounds
  • Loss of balance

Frequently Asked Question

Can a pharmacist give me antibiotics for an earache?

Yes, for certain age groups. Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacists can supply antibiotics to children aged 1 to 17 years if they have an acute inner ear infection. For adults, we can provide treatments for outer ear infections or recommend the best over the counter relief.

In children, the most common cause is a bacterial or viral infection. In adults, earaches are often caused by “swimmer’s ear” (infection of the outer ear canal), changes in air pressure, or even referred pain from a sore throat or dental issue.

The NHS recommends using a warm or cold flannel against the ear to soothe the pain. You should avoid putting anything inside the ear, such as cotton buds, as this can push wax further in or damage the eardrum. Over the counter painkillers can also help manage the fever and ache.

Most ear infections are viral and clear up on their own within 3 to 7 days. If the symptoms are severe, include a high fever, or if there is discharge leaking from the ear, you should visit our Bethnal Green pharmacy for a clinical assessment.

You should seek urgent medical advice if you notice swelling around the ear, if the earache is accompanied by a very high temperature and vomiting, or if there is a sudden loss of hearing. If your eardrum has burst (perforated), you will likely see fluid leaking out and feel a sudden drop in pain; this requires a professional review.
